The
Book of Luccombe & Selworthy
Compiled & edited
by Graham Haw
Price £14.95 Published 16 November 2001
This book is a pictorial history of the two parishes and features
376 photographs, maps & documents - many previously unpublished.
It is a large format, A4, 176 page, hardback book, the product of
a group of local people with a keen interest in local history, and
is fully indexed. The book traces the development of the villages
and hamlets in Luccombe and Selworthy from the earliest times, but
essentially celebrates the last 100 years. The Parishes of Luccombe
and Selworthy between them encompass much of the fertile Vale of
Porlock. In addition, the parish of Selworthy extends beyond the
top of Bossington Hill and Selworthy Beacon, with the parish of Luccombe
extending south almost to Dunkery Beacon, and includes many hill
farms and open moorland. For centuries the economy of these
parishes has been based on farming and milling, and more recently
supported by a thriving tourist trade. Although
it is principally
a book aimed at people who live in the parishes, their ancestors
or
whose families have connections with them, it is also a book that
will
delight anyone
who has an eye for our past, and a love of Exmoor.
